ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Cup winners Việt Nam will face South Korea in the first edition of a new competition next March.
They vie for the champion trophy against South Korea, winners of the East Asian Football Federation Championship, in a match next March.
The match between the AFF Cup winners and the East Asian Football Federation (EAFF) Championship victors is part of activities in a deal signed between the AFF and the EAFF at a meeting held in Hà Nội on Saturday.
According to the deal, the winners of the AFF Cup will play the winners of the EAFF E-1 Football Championship in a new competition, named the AFF-EAFF Champions Trophy every two years.
The first edition is to be held on March 26 at Mỹ Đình Stadium. The second will be held in 2021.
“We are glad to have agreed to hold the AFF-EAFF Champions Trophy match after the two federations have promised to co-operate in the development of each others’ football. I am confident that the friendship of the two federations will be one of the most successful examples of partnership between regional federations in FIFA,” said Chung Mong-gyu, president of the EAFF.
The AFF gathers 11 regional delegations, competing in their championship which is organised every two years.
The EAFF consists of some of some giants of Asian football in South Korea, China and Japan among others who compete in the EAFF E-1 Championship biennially.
