When it comes to a match involving disabled players, a referee must have a fresh set of skills. The AFC Referees Disability Awareness Seminar, which started on Monday here, aims to provide referees with the knowledge and skills required to take charge of disabled footballers.

The two-day workshop will help referees in their preparations for a disability football match and enable them to understand the skills required.

The course, conducted by British expert John Ball, teaches referees how they can apply their existing skills for disability matches and the communication skills required.

In addition, referees must know the different categories of disability and how these related to decisions made during a match.

Ball is a veteran coach, referee and member of the English FA Disability Equality Advisory Group and Operational Sub-Group.

With more than 50 years involved in football, he has also been coach of the Great Britain Blind Squad for the Paralympics.
