Securing all three points against Bangkok United, Nam Định FC move closer to the semifinals of the Shopee Cup 2025/26
Xuân Son shone with a brace, playing a key role in Nam Định FC’s convincing 4-1 away victory over Bangkok United, a result that moved the Vietnamese side closer to a place in the semifinals of the ASEAN Club Championship – Shopee Cup 2025/26.
After being eliminated from the AFC Champions League Two 2025/26, Nam Định FC shifted their full focus to the regional stage. Facing an evenly matched opponent, the team from Thành Nam fielded their strongest lineup, featuring key players such as Xuân Son, Percy Tau and Lucas Alves.
Adopting a cautious approach from the outset, Nam Định FC prioritized defensive solidity to protect goalkeeper Nguyên Mạnh’s goal. This approach made for a tight contest, with Bangkok United struggling to break through the well-organized defensive system of the Vietnamese representatives.
The turning point came in the 44th minute, when a scramble inside the hosts’ penalty area allowed Lucas Alves to fire home a left-footed finish to open the scoring for Nam Định. The goal helped relieve the pressure on the visitors and provided valuable momentum heading into the break.
At the start of the second half, Nam Định quickly doubled their advantage. Percy Tau burst down the left flank before delivering a precise cross for Xuân Son to tap in from close range, making it 2-0.
Conceding a second goal left Bangkok United unsettled in their organization, while Nam Định continued to exploit the spaces that emerged. In the 59th minute, Percy Tau unleashed a long-range effort that the Bangkok United goalkeeper failed to hold, allowing Ngọc Sơn to pounce and finish clinically to extend the visitors’ lead to 3-0.
Despite their best efforts, Bangkok United were only able to pull one goal back in the 85th minute from a corner kick, with Wisarut capitalizing on a loose ball to score for the hosts. However, that was all the Thai side could manage in this match.
In the closing minutes, Nam Định continued to assert their superiority. Xuân Son completed his brace with a clever touch and a decisive finish into the near corner, sealing a 4-1 victory for the team from Thành Nam.
With three consecutive wins in the Shopee Cup 2025/26, Nam Định FC further strengthened their position at the top of Group B and moved very close to securing a place in the semifinals of the ASEAN Club Championship.
