The Vietnam under-16 team were unlucky in their opening game of the Asian under-16 football qualifying round as they were held to a 1-1 draw by minnows Cambodia on October 24.

Huynh Van Thanh opened the scoring after 58 minutes but his effort was cancelled out ten minutes later.

The Vietnamese under-16s dominated the game from kick off, posing a regular threat to the Cambodian defence.

However, they had to wait until the 58th minute to the break deadlock with Van Thanh breaking into the box before beating the Cambodian goalie.

Ten minutes later, the Cambodian side levelled, capitalising on a mistake by Ngo Hoang Thinh, whose pass gifted the Cambodian side with the chance.

In the remaining minutes, the Vietnamese under-16s continued to dominate the game and were unlucky to see the woodwork deny them.

In another match, Japan beat Laos 2-0 to top the group.
