Starting the game needing a victory to qualify, they eagerly pushed forward in search of goals. The Malaysians made them pay dearly getting three goals by the 70th minute. The Vietnamese managed a consolation goal in the final minutes.
Vietnam had lost 4-1 to Laos in the opening match August 27. Laos became the first team to qualify for the semis from group B.
