Malaysia spurned an opportunity to take the lead as early as the second minute after Muhammad Nabil was played into the box but the midfielder smashed his effort high over the bar.

Vietnam were more clinical with their chance two minutes later after Aiman Khaufly had initially saved Nguyen Huynh Dang Khoa’s flick from Chu Ngoc Nguyen Luc’s free-kick, with Nguyen Van Duong then squaring the ball to Nguyen Manh Cuong for an easy tap-in.

The open game saw Nabil forcing Ly Xuan Hoa into a good save before Aiman thwarted Van Duong’s strike with Le Sy Bach’s effort from the rebound bouncing off the post.

Vietnam struck again with two minutes of the first half left on the clock, Van Duong skinned Adam Muqri on the left before drilling a low cross which was stabbed home by Nguyen Ngoc Anh Hao.

Vietnam extended their lead in the 50th minute after Malaysia failed to clear their lines from Dao Quy Vuong’s corner delivery, with Van Duong curling home past a stranded Aiman.

Malaysia looked for a way back but were let down by poor finishing after Nabil nipped in ahead of Anh Hao in the box but was unable to get his shot on target.

Vietnam made sure of the win in the 76th minute when Sy Bach twisted away from Tengku Ahmad before firing a low shot into the bottom corner to send his side through.
