The ASEAN Football Federation have announced that Singapore and Vietnam will be the co-hosts of the AFF Suzuki Cup group stages in 2014.
The selection of the host countries was confirmed by the AFF Council at a meeting in Kuantan on Wednesday.
Singapore, who won the AFF Suzuki Cup for a record fourth time by beating Thailand 3-2 on aggregate in the two-legged final last December, will stage the region’s most prestigious tournament at the new 55,000-seat National Stadium which is due to open in the first half of next year.
The stadium, being built on the site of the old ground famed for the Kallang Roar, is part of the ambitious Singapore Sports Hub complex.
It will be the third time Singapore have hosted the ASEAN Football Championship after the 1996, 2002 and 2007 editions.
The group in Vietnam will be played at the My Dinh National Stadium in Hanoi where the celebrated Le Cong Vinh’s headed goal in overtime presented his country with the AFF Suzuki Cup for the first time in December, 2008. Vietnam staged the event in 1998, 2004 and 2010.
The format and dates of the 2014 tournament are still to be finalised.
