ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup 2024 draw results: Vietnam is in the same group as Indonesia
On the afternoon of May 21 in Hanoi, the drawing ceremony to divide the group and arrange the match schedule for the ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup 2024 took place. The lucky draw has created interesting confrontations, in notably, the reunion between Vietnam National Team and Indonesian National Team in Group B.
This is the second time Vietnam has been chosen by the AFF as the venue to host the opening event for the most attractive football tournament in Southeast Asia. Attending from AFF was Major General Khiev Sameth – President of AFF, Mr. Winston Lee – Vice President and Secretary General of AFF; On the representative side of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, there was Mr. Hoang Dao Cuong – Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism; On the side of the Department of Sports and Physical Training, there was Mr. Dang Ha Viet – Director of the Vietnam Sports Administration; On the representative side of VFF were Mr. Tran Quoc Tuan – VFF President, Mr. Tran Anh Tu – Vice President, Mr. Nguyen Trung Kien – Vice President. The ceremony also welcomed the presence of head coaches of the teams, representatives of sponsors, AFF commercial partners, and numerous representatives of domestic and international media agencies.
In the welcoming speech at the ceremony, VFF President Tran Quoc Tuan thanked AFF and Mitsubishi Electric Corporation for trusting in allowing Vietnam to host the draw for Southeast Asia’s No. 1 tournament, at the same time affirming that VFF will join other members of the ASEAN Football Family in making every effort to have the best preparation for this important tournament.

More than 4 billion views via digital media channels such as Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok. “The ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric CupTM has consistently proven to be our region’s top football tournament, with record-breaking television and digital viewership with every edition of the event. Looking at the Official Draw today, we anticipate another exciting competition for fans and commercial partners across our region of 660m people.”
According to the competition format announced by AFF, the 10 teams participating in the ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup 2024 are divided into 2 groups, each group has 5 teams. Teams compete in a round-robin format in the group stage (each team plays 2 matches at home and 2 matches at the opponent’s stadium), scoring and ranking. The top two teams in each group qualify for the semi-finals. From the semi-finals, the matches will take place in a knockout format after two rounds of matches, home and away.
Regarding the principle of drawing, the 10 teams are divided into 5 pots based on the rankings of Southeast Asian teams calculated based on the achievements of the two most recent AFF Cup periods. Accordingly, the Vietnam and Thailand teams are in pot 1. Pot 2 includes Malaysia and Indonesia; Singapore and the Philippines are in Pot 3; Cambodia and Myanmar are in Pot 4. Teams Brunei, Timor Leste, and Laos are in Pot 5. In particular, Timor Leste and Brunei will play the play-off to determine the participating ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup 2024.
As a result of the draw, the Vietnam team is in Group B along with opponents: Indonesia, Philippines, Indonesia and Laos. Group A is a race between Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Cambodia, and the winner of the play-off between Timor Leste and Brunei.
ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup 2024 will take place from November 23 to December 21, 2024. In the group stage, Vietnam will play the opening match against Laos away from home on November 24, then return home to host Indonesia on November 30. In the next match, coach Kim Sang Sik and the team will meet the Philippines away from home on December 3 and end the group stage with a match against Myanmar on December 7 at home.
