The Vietnamese women”s football team will start the campaign to defend their title at the 2007 Southeast Asia championship on September 7 with the Philippines.
The ASEAN Football Federation has recently sent official fixtures of the 2007 Southeast Asian women”s championship, held in Myanmar from September 6-15, to its affiliate federations.
Accordingly, eight teams, seven from Southeast Asia and one invited from East Asia will compete in the tournament.
Vietnam will compete in Group A with Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines, while Thailand, Myanmar, Singapore and the invitational guests will compete for two berths in the semi-finals in Group B. So far, the name of the invited team from East Asia has not been announced yet.
The teams will compete on a round-robin basis and winners and runners-up of each group will reach the semi-finals.
The 2007 championship will be of an important meaning for Southeast Asian teams, who will compete at the 24th SEA Games in Thailand in December.
The Vietnamese team won the 2006 championship, featuring four teams, Vietnam, Thailand, Myanmar and Taiwan, after three victories.
In preparation for the event, the Vietnamese team will be called up shortly after they finish their qualifying games for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
