The 23rd SEA Games closed after nine days of competition in Metro Manila, the Philippines, on December 5 with a simple and pleasant ceremony at the Quirino Grand Stand.

The 23rd SEA Games closed after nine days of competition in Metro Manila, the Philippines, on December 5 with a simple and pleasant ceremony at the Quirino Grand Stand.

In nine days, from November 27 to December 5, around 7,000 athletes from 11 countries competed in 40 sports for 439 sets of medals. More importantly, according to Filipino president Arroyo, the SEA Games was an opportunity for the countries in South East Asia promote their friendship and unity for a joint spirit One heritage, one South East Asia.”

The Vietnamese sports delegation won 71 golds, 68 silvers and 89 bronzes, ranking third in the medal tally of the 23rd SEA Games.
 
The Philippines as hosts won 113 golds, 84 silvers and 94 bronzes, came first; and Thailand with 87 golds, 78 silvers and 118 bronzes ranked second.
 
This is the first time that Vietnam was among the first three countries in a regional sports event held in another country.
 
The 24th SEA Games in 2007 will be held in Thailand, who hosted the 1959, 1967, 1975, 1985 and 1995 SEA Games.
