U20 Vietnam looks forward to a new goal after the journey at the 2023 AFC U20 Asian Cup
On the afternoon of March 9, a connecting flight from Istanbul (Turkey) carrying U20 Vietnam landed at Noi Bai International Airport (Hanoi). Despite the unfortunate stop at the group stage of the 2023 AFC U20 Asian Cup, the performance of coach Hoang Anh Tuan’s team still captured the love of many fans, giving them more confidence to move forward.
On behalf of the VFF to the airport to welcome the team, General Secretary Duong Nghiep Khoi presented flowers to congratulate and send encouragement from the VFF President Tran Quoc Tuan and the Standing Committee to the head coach Hoang Anh Tuan and the members of the team.
In an interview with the press to pick up the team at the airport, coach Hoang Anh Tuan said: “The performance of U20 Vietnam in this tournament I think is acceptable. We still have a lot of distance compared to the top competitors, but the fact that the players play well through the matches is also something for us to believe. Regrets but it must be acknowledged that if it continues, it is of course good, but stopping is still a beautiful journey.”
The coach who made the history when led U19 Vietnam to the semi-finals of the 2016 Asian Cup and won the right to participate in the 2017 FIFA U20 World Cup finals shared: “All comparisons (with 2016) are very lame. I think the previous generation, you see, where are they? It’s the national team, that’s the key. I think this generation, the next 2-3 years they will be the same. We should be objective about that.”
Coach Hoang Anh Tuan assessed: “Vietnam football has changed a lot. The club has been more interested in training young players, the VFF has a good orientation, the national teams have been trained and played a lot abroad. Compared to other countries, it is not equal, but compared to before, it is much better. Tournaments from U17 to U19, U23 are available. But there is still much more to work on. More youth training clubs are needed, so that we have more options and filter out the most quintessential players.”
After finishing their journey at the 2023 AFC U20 Asian Cup, the players will return to the club to continue training and compete in domestic tournaments. It is expected that some outstanding players in the U20 Vietnam squad will be summoned by coach Philippe Troussier to be added to the U23 Vietnam national team during the third training period, taking place from March 12 to March 17 to prepare for the upcoming task.
