Vietnam lose friendly against Japan
The Japanese side, with many outstanding footballers playing for leading European clubs, dominated the game from the start and created waves of attacks seeking to score immediately after the first whistle.
In the 28th minute, Japanese striker Tadanari Lee received a left-wing pass from midfielder Makoto Hasebe and brought the host to a leading postion with a strong shot into Vietnam’s goal.
During the remaining minutes of the first half, Japan continued to take control of the match but did not manage to score more goals.
Five minutes after the break, Vietnamese midfielder Trong Hoang stole the ball from Yasuyuki Konno and fired a powerful kick towards the Japanese goal but the shot was saved by goalie Nishikawa. The Japanese goalkeeper also made a brilliant save from Cong Vinh’s header, tipping the ball over the bar.
After a bright re-start from Vietnam, Japan again took control of the game but failed to widen the gap.
Vietnam faced increasing difficulties when midfielder Chi Cong was sent off due to a second yellow card just two minutes before the final whistle. However, with only 10 players, the team still succeeded in protecting their net despite determined efforts by Japan.
In spite of the predictable loss to Japan, Vietnamese players satisfied home fans because of their heroic efforts, confidence and determination during the 90 minute match against the defending Asian football champions.
The friendly match was a warm-up for Japan in its preparations for an important game with Tajikistan in the third round of the 2014 World Cup Asia Zone qualifiers this coming Tuesday.
