Vietnam Team greets Thien Truong Stadium with a friendly match against a world ranked 90th opponent
As part of the plan towards the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers, after a friendly match with Hong Kong Team (China) at Lach Tray Stadium, Hai Phong on June 15, Vietnam Team will continue to have one more match at Thien Truong, Nam Dinh on June 20. The opponent is Syria – the team is ranked 5 places above Vietnam in the FIFA rankings and is led by the famous coach Hector Cuper.
This afternoon (May 29), the VFF delegation led by General Secretary Duong Nghiep Khoi had a working session with the leaders of the Nam Dinh Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism on the plan to organize a friendly match between the Vietnam and Syria Team at Thien Truong Stadium. This will also be the first time that Vietnam Team will debut to the Thanh Nam audience – enthusiastic Vietnamese football fans who made a strong impression with the festive atmosphere on the stands of Thien Truong Stadium at the 31st SEA Games. as well as at home team matches at the V.League playground.
Working with the VFF delegation, Mr. Nguyen Tien Dung – Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Nam Dinh province, and Mr. Nguyen Tan Anh – Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Nam Dinh province expressed their excitement when Thanh Nam’s hometown has the opportunity to host an international match of Vietnam Team. Leaders of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Nam Dinh province affirmed that they will work closely with the VFF and create the most favorable conditions for Vietnam Team as well as the Syrian away team when coming to Nam Dinh to play friendly matches to serve the Nam Dinh fans in particular and nationwide fans in general. Mr. Nguyen Tien Dung said, right after the meeting with the VFF, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism will have a specific report to the leaders of the Provincial People’s Committee to soon implement the preparations for the match.
Syria is currently ranked 90th in the world, 5 places higher than Vietnam in the FIFA rankings. This team also reached the final qualifying round of the 2022 World Cup in Asia like Vietnam. Syria has won 6 points in this qualifying round, with 1 victory over Lebanon and 3 draws against rivals Iraq (2 times) and the UAE. Syria also showed their ability when they only lost close to World Cup teams like Iran and South Korea in the first leg of the qualifying round at that time.
Leading Syria is the famous coach Hector Cuper. This 65-year-old strategist has led famous European clubs in the past such as Valencia, Inter Milan, Real Betis, and Parma. Recently, he coached Egypt, Uzbekistan, and Congo before training Syria.
In the squad, Syria had many quality players. Some faces are playing football in Europe such as Abdul Weiss, Oliver Kawo, Amma Ramadan, Simon Amin, etc.
At the 2023 Asian Cup finals, Syria is also in the third seed group along with Vietnam and the teams: Bahrain, Palestine, Kyrgyzstan, and Lebanon.
