Viet Nam”s national football team has leapt 25 places to 117th position in the International Federation of Football Associations (FIFA) ranking this month.
This is the highest position Viet Nam has reached since FIFA launched new ranking regulations in July 2006, a jump attributed to impressive performances before and during the qualifying round of the Asian Cup 2007 plus triumphs over Jamaica and Bahrain in late June friendly matches.
With this result, Viet Nam overtook Singapore, which dropped one place to 132, to take second position in the Southeast Asia region after Thailand.
The Asian Cup also helped Thailand and Indonesia, two of the four co-hosts of the tournament, up their positions as Thailand climbed to 107th and Indonesia 127th.
Meanwhile, three losses to China, Uzbekistan and Iran pushed Malaysia, another Asian Cup host, down five places to 154th position.
