The draw for the group stage of the 3rd Vietnam Student Football Championship – 2025 THACO Cup
On the morning of February 27, at the headquarters of Thanh Niên Newspaper (Ho Chi Minh City), the draw for the group stage of the 3rd Vietnam Student Football Championship – 2025 THACO Cup (TNSV THACO Cup 2025) took place. General Secretary Nguyễn Văn Phú represented the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) to attend and encourage the teams.
The qualifying round of the TNSV THACO Cup 2025 took place from December 28, 2024, to January 18, 2025, with the participation of 66 teams from academies, universities, and colleges across the country. A total of 101 matches were held, resulting in 376 goals (an average of 3.72 goals per match). The student players delivered thrilling matches, featuring intense score comebacks and tense penalty shootouts.
The qualifying round also witnessed many big surprises. Defending champion, the University of Sports Pedagogy Ho Chi Minh City, was eliminated early after losing to the University of Danang University of Science and Technology in a penalty shootout (3-4, after a 0-0 draw in regular time). Similarly, the runner-up for two consecutive seasons (2023 and 2024), the Water Resources University, also failed to make it to the finals after losing 2-3 in a penalty shootout to the University of Culture, Sports, and Tourism Thanh Hoa (0-0 after 80 minutes of regular play). Additionally, strong teams like the University of Van Lang, the University of Agriculture and Forestry Ho Chi Minh City, the University of Technical Education Ho Chi Minh City, and the National Economics University also bowed out early, creating major shocks in this year’s tournament.
The TNSV THACO Cup 2025 finals will take place from March 1 to March 16, featuring the 12 best teams, including: the University of Culture, Sports, and Tourism Thanh Hoa, the University of Sports Pedagogy Hanoi (Northern region), the University of Sports Pedagogy Da Nang, the University of Hue (Central Coastal region), the University of Quy Nhon (Central and Central Highlands region), the University of Technology Dong Nai (Southeast region), the University of Tra Vinh (Southwest region), the University of Danang – University of Science and Technology, the University of Technology Ho Chi Minh City, the University of Industry Ho Chi Minh City (Ho Chi Minh City region), along with the two best runner-up teams, the University of Ton Duc Thang and the University of Van Hien. The tournament promises to deliver exciting and intense matches, as all teams are determined to conquer the championship. This third season will be very special, as experts will select the best players in terms of expertise to supplement two Vietnamese teams participating in the international student tournament, the first edition of which will take place from March 22 to March 30.
Co-chair of the organizing committee, Thanh Niên Newspaper’s Editor-in-Chief Nguyễn Ngọc Toàn, and General Secretary of the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) Nguyễn Văn Phú both expressed their commitment to maintaining the quality of the student football competition. “We always hope and expect that from the TNSV THACO Cup 2025, we will see many beautiful images and football talents. The top teams have many student players. We can see that student football in South Korea, Japan, China, and the Middle East has a lineup of players with exceptional skills. I hope that this final round will lay the foundation for that goal. The Vietnam Football Federation affirms its continuous support and ensures the quality of the organization,” emphasized General Secretary Nguyễn Văn Phú.
