U16 to play tough rivals at Asian championship
Việt Nam are in Group B along with Australia, Japan and Kyrgyzstan in the Asian Football Confederation U16 Championship to be held in India in September.
This will prove difficult for the team as it is currently outclassed by Australia and Japan on a global level.
Thailand are the other ASEAN representative. They are in Group D and will compete against North Korea, Uzbekistan and Yemen.
Eight other teams are divided into Group A and B.
Each group will play a one-round league and the top two teams in each group will qualify for the quarter-finals. The four winners will then qualify for the semi-finals. The winners of the semi-finals will advance to the final.
The top four ranked teams at this year’s AFC U16 Championship will qualify for the FIFA U17 World Cup in India next year.
In the event that India finish among the top four teams, three play-off matches will be organised among the four losing teams of the quarter-finals to determine the fifth placed team that will qualify for the tournament in India in 2017.
