U20 Vietnam are allowed to participate in Asiad 19 and AFF U23 Championship 2023
As part of the plan to build a force for the national team to achieve long-term goals, and based on the schedule of international tournaments in 2023, the Vietnam Football Federation has decided to establish two U23 Vietnam teams for the separate missions, in which one team will participate in the 2024 AFC U23 Asian Cup Qualifier and the other will participate in 2 tournaments including Asiad 19 and the 2023 AFF U23 Championship.

Specifically, the U23 Vietnam team participating in the 2024 AFC U23 Asian Cup Qualifier will have the best players in the U23 age group of Vietnamese football, directly in charge of coach Philippe Troussier. This team will focus on parallel with the national team during the FIFA days in September. Not only participating in the 2024 AFC U23 Asian Cup Qualifiers, the outstanding players in this U23 squad will be selected to add to the national team composition towards the Second Qualifier of the FIFA World Cup 2026, which kicks off in November.
Meanwhile, the Vietnam Olympic team participating in Asiad 19 and U23 Vietnam participating in the 2023 AFF U23 Championship will be a collection of core players mostly of the U20 age group combined with some U23 players, by coach Hoang Anh Tuan in charge.
VFF Vice President Tran Anh Tu said that the decision to select the core force of U20 players to attend Asiad 19 and the 2023 AFF U23 Championship has been approved by the VFF Executive Committee and has also received approval from the Vietnam Sports Administration. “In 2023, we have 3 tournaments for the U23 level, which are the 2024 AFC U23 Asian Cup Qualifier, the 19th Asiad and the 2023 AFF U23 Championship taking place from August to the end of September and beginning of October. Along with that is the plan of activities of the national team during the FIFA days of September, October and the 2023 World Cup Qualifiers in November. Therefore, we need to have a calculation to ensure that we can both well protect the force for the main goals, while helping to create experience accumulation and continuous improvement for young U20 players in the international arena, towards long-term goals. In the immediate future, this group of players will be the preparation factors for the SEA Games 33 campaign and the 2026 AFC U23 Asian Cup Qualifier in 2025,” said Vice President of the Vietnam Football Federation Tran Anh Tu.
Regarding the empowerment of coach Hoang Anh Tuan to lead the Olympic and U23 Vietnam teams with the core force of U20 participating in Asiad 19 and the 2023 AFF U23 Championships, Vice President of the Vietnam Football Federation Tran Anh Tu said, this is the right decision because coach Hoang Anh Tuan knows this group of players very well, he has recently directly coached and led the U17 and U20 Vietnam teams to attend the Asian Cup. Besides, coach Hoang Anh Tuan is also known as a great inspiration to young players when he was with the U20 Vietnam team for the first time in history to attend the 2017 FIFA U20 World Cup. Many students of coach Hoang Anh Tuan are now the mainstays of the national team. That’s why the VFF put their trust in coach Hoang Anh Tuan in training and coaching young football. Hopefully, coach Hoang Anh Tuan will continue to receive the support of everyone to complete the assigned task”, Vice President of the Vietnam Football Federation Tran Anh Tu shared.
According to the plan, the U23 Vietnam with a force of U20 players led by coach Hoang Anh Tuan will gather on July 28, preparing for the 2023 AFF U23 Championship which will take place from 17 August to August 26 in Thailand. Next, the team will move to the training phase to prepare for Asiad 19, which will take place in Hangzhou (China) from September 23 to October 8.
The U23 Vietnam participating in the 2024 AFC U23 Asian Cup Qualifier led by coach Philippe Troussier will gather at the same time as the national team to prepare for FIFA in June, after the 2023 V.League ends.
