Vietnam’s women’s football team crushed the Philippines 10-0 at the 24th Southeast Asian Games at Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand yesterday.

The win helped the three-time SEA Games champions top group A – which includes Laos and the Philippines – and secure a berth in the semi-finals.

Vietnam dominated from the first minute of the match against the underdogs with six goals scored before the end of the first half.

Hanoian striker Do Thi Ngoc Cham opened the score just 19 minutes into the game when she fired a skilful shot at a far corner. She then supported the team’s second goal, just four minutes later.

In a one-two pass, Cham tipped the ball to teammate Doan Thi Kim Chi, who trailed the pass to launch a rocket to the back of the net.

The Philippines, who drew Laos 2-2 in the group opener, failed to open attacks against Vietnam, as they had to concentrate on defence in order to stem the Vietnamese offensive.

In the 33rd minute, Cham made it 3-0 when she took a header home from striker Bui Thi Tuyet Mai’s right lob.

Captain Doan Thi Kim achieved her hat trick with two more goals scored in the brutally, one-sided match.

The Hanoian striker Cham also marked her hat trick with a goal in the last minute of the first half as she escaped from an off-side trap to net the ball.

After the break, left winger Tran Thi Kim Hong scored the seventh goal for Vietnam when her outside right curve changed direction and beat keeper Nadia Galan.

Chinese coach Chan Yan Fat substituted captain Kim Chi with youngster Nguyen Thi Minh Nguyet, who proved she was worthy of be in named in the national squad competing in the SEA Games.

Nguyet scored twice in the 68th and 76th minutes before striker Tuyet Mai closed the match with the 10th goal in the 77th minute.

Vietnamese keeper Kieu Trinh had only one chance to test her skills in the second half when she parried a long shot from an attack by the Philippines.

Vietnam will meet Laos in the last game on Saturday.

Hosts Thailand play in Group B with Myanmar and Malaysia.
