Vietnam Women’s Team Reach Quarter-finals After Draw with Thailand
In their final Group E match of the women’s football tournament at the 2026 Asian Games, the Vietnam Women’s Team played out a 0-0 draw with Thailand. With this result, Vietnam secured a place in the quarter-finals of the women’s football tournament.
29/09/2026 18:14:57The “Southeast Asian derby” between Vietnam and Thailand was expected to be a fiercely contested encounter, with both teams determined to secure a result that would see them advance to the next round. However, Vietnam held a slight advantage, as a draw would be enough to secure qualification, easing some of the pressure on head coach Hoàng Văn Phúc and his players.
Both teams started cautiously, and during the opening 20 minutes, neither side was able to create any clear-cut chances on goal. In the 21st minute, Hải Yến made a determined run into Thailand’s penalty area, but the Thai defenders managed to clear the ball out for a corner.
Thailand came close to Kim Thanh’s goal in the 29th minute, but the resulting effort lacked accuracy. It was a necessary warning for Hoàng Văn Phúc’s side, as Thailand gradually recovered from their early spell of pressure to regain control of the game, level the play and put Vietnam’s defence under increasing pressure.
Playing cautiously, the Vietnam Women’s Team managed just two shots in the first half, prompting hopes that Hoàng Văn Phúc’s side would adopt a more proactive approach after the break.
However, Thanh Nhã came close to scoring an own goal in the 52nd minute following a Thailand attack. The Thai side dominated the second half, mounting several attacks around Kim Thanh’s goal and putting Vietnam’s defence under considerable pressure.
As the match entered its closing stages, Thailand became increasingly anxious, knowing that only a win would secure their place in the next round, while Vietnam needed just a draw. Thailand continued to apply pressure, but the Vietnam Women’s Team defended resolutely to keep a clean sheet.
With the 0-0 draw, Vietnam secured a place in the quarter-finals of the women’s football tournament as one of the two best third-placed teams.
Immediately after the match, on behalf of the Executive Committee and Standing Executive Committee of the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF), VFF President Trần Quốc Tuấn congratulated and encouraged the team. He also reminded the players to maintain their fitness, stay fully focused and make thorough preparations for the upcoming quarter-final.
Following the team’s qualification for the quarter-finals, VFF awarded the Vietnam Women’s Team VND 500 million as an encouragement bonus. The support from VFF leadership and encouragement from the fans will provide a major boost for the team as they prepare to enter the quarter-finals with confidence.
