National Women’s Cup 2026: Hanoi II defeat Than KSVN in penalty shootout to finish fifth
On the afternoon of May 22, the fifth-place playoff match of the 2026 National Women’s Cup between Hanoi II and Than KSVN at Thai Nguyen Stadium concluded with a victory for the young capital side after a tense penalty shootout.
Entering the match, Than KSVN were considered the stronger side. The mining team quickly took control of the game and applied constant pressure on Hanoi II’s goal. However, against a disciplined and well-organized defense, Than KSVN’s forwards were unable to capitalize on their chances in the opening half.
In the second half, Hanoi II surprisingly broke the deadlock. From two consecutive free-kick situations down the left flank, the capital side created significant pressure in front of Than KSVN’s goal. In an attempt to clear the danger, Bảo Trâm unfortunately turned the ball into her own net, handing Hanoi II the lead.
After conceding, Than KSVN pushed forward in search of an equalizer. Coach Đoàn Minh Hải’s side launched continuous attacks and intensified the pressure for much of the remaining time. Their persistence paid off in the 87th minute when Thu Phương scored a crucial goal to level the match at 1-1.
In the closing minutes, both teams showed great determination, but neither could find another breakthrough. The match was ultimately decided by a penalty shootout.
In the penalty shootout, Than KSVN goalkeeper Ái Vy made an impressive save, but Hanoi II proved to be the more composed side. Goalkeeper Hoài Thương delivered an outstanding performance by denying two opposition spot-kicks, helping Hanoi II secure a 4-3 victory on penalties and finish the tournament in fifth place. Than KSVN ended the competition in sixth place overall.
