Vietnam national futsal team return home after SEA Games 33, setting sights on the AFC Futsal Asian Cup 2026
After concluding their campaign at the 33rd SEA Games, the Vietnam national futsal team returned home on the afternoon of December 20, wrapping up their participation at the regional sporting event and moving forward with preparations for their next major target, the AFC Futsal Asian Cup 2026.
Mr. Doan Anh Tuan, Head of the National Teams Department of the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF), and Ms. Pham Thi Dung, Deputy Chief of the VFF Office, were present at Noi Bai International Airport to welcome the members of the Vietnam national futsal team returning to the northern region.
In Bangkok, the Vietnam futsal team was divided into two groups travelling back to Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. The coaching staff and players returned to their respective clubs to continue training, while remaining ready to regroup for the next national team camp according to the VFF’s plan, in preparation for the AFC Futsal Asian Cup 2026.
At the 33rd SEA Games, the Vietnam futsal team competed with great effort and determination, facing high-intensity matches against leading regional opponents such as Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia. Although the team did not achieve the goal of winning a medal, the tournament was regarded as an important test of personnel, competitive mentality and tactical execution, especially in the context of a strongly rejuvenated squad.
The AFC Futsal Asian Cup 2026 finals will take place from January 27 to February 7, 2026, in Jakarta, Indonesia. The tournament will feature 16 of the strongest teams in Asia, divided into four groups, playing a single round-robin format to determine the top two teams from each group advancing to the quarter-finals.
According to the draw, the Vietnam national futsal team has been placed in Group B alongside reigning runners-up Thailand, Kuwait and Lebanon. This group includes several familiar opponents for Vietnam futsal and is considered highly challenging, but also presents an opportunity for head coach Diego Giustozzi and his players to demonstrate their character and compete strongly for a place in the knockout stage.
With valuable lessons learned from the 33rd SEA Games, along with a well-structured and long-term preparation strategy from the VFF, the Vietnam national futsal team now embarks on a new journey with strong determination to improve professional quality, aiming for a successful campaign at the AFC Futsal Asian Cup 2026 and to further affirm their position on the continental stage.
