Vietnam U16 futsal lose 1–5 to Thailand, await their chance in the final round of the 2025 AFF U16 Futsal Championship

Facing the tournament’s strongest-rated opponent, the Vietnam U16 futsal team fought hard but were unable to cause an upset, eventually accepting a 1–5 defeat to hosts Thailand in the fourth group-stage match of the 2025 ASEAN Boy’s U16 Futsal Championship.

Entering the match with high determination, Vietnam U16 futsal were soon put under heavy pressure as Thailand U16 futsal quickly imposed their dominance right from the opening whistle. In the very first minute, Wangsikpakhun opened the scoring for the hosts. By the 9th minute, Petchtiam added another goal, allowing Thailand U16 futsal to head into the break with a 2–0 lead.

In the second half, Vietnam U16 futsal continued to struggle against the hosts’ high-tempo style and superior ball control. Thailand added three more goals in the 30th, 32nd and 40th minutes, scored by Srijuy, Potikornpat and Wangsikpakhun respectively. The efforts of coach Trinh Huu Thanh’s side were only rewarded with a consolation goal by Do Manh Tien in the 39th minute.

In the end, Vietnam U16 futsal suffered a 1–5 defeat to Thailand U16 futsal. With this result, Vietnam U16 futsal’s chances of progressing will be decided in the final group-stage match on December 27. Accordingly, coach Trinh Huu Thanh’s team must secure a big win against Brunei U16 futsal, while also hoping that Indonesia U16 futsal fail to achieve a favorable result against Thailand, with goal difference determining the qualification places.

According to the match schedule on December 27, Vietnam U16 futsal will face Brunei U16 futsal at 11:00, while the match between Thailand U16 futsal and Indonesia U16 futsal will kick off at 13:30.
