AFC WOMEN'S CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

Ho Chi Minh City WFC makes history despite semi-final exit in AFC Women’s Champions League

Ho Chi Minh City Women’s Football Club (HCMC WFC) concluded their remarkable run in the AFC Women’s Champions League 2024/25 with a historic semi-final appearance, marking a major milestone for Vietnamese football.

Facing a formidable Wuhan Jiangda side in the semi-finals on May 21, HCMC WFC fell 0-2, but not without displaying grit, determination, and the spirit that has carried them further than any Vietnamese women’s club has ever gone in this prestigious continental tournament.

This season saw the Vietnamese champions defy expectations from the outset. In the quarter-finals, they delivered one of the most thrilling comebacks of the tournament, overturning a 0-3 deficit to defeat Abu Dhabi Country Club 5-4 — a match that captured the hearts of fans across the region.

Though they were ultimately outclassed by a dominant Wuhan Jiangda — a side fresh off a win against Japan’s Urawa Red Diamonds Ladies — HCMC WFC exit the tournament with their heads held high. Their campaign has been lauded as a breakthrough moment for Vietnamese women’s football.

HCMC WFC’s courageous run is expected to inspire the next generation of female footballers in Vietnam and shine a spotlight on the growing strength of Southeast Asian teams in Asian football’s top competitions.

As the team returns home, they do so not just as semi-finalists, but as trailblazers for the future of Vietnamese football.
