Lose to Pathum United 1-3 in the second leg, Viettel FC doesn’t have chance in this round

Viettel took a deserved lead in the first half, but a flurry of goals after the break saw Thailand’s BG Pathum United secure the vital win to stay second in Group F with nine points from four games, while Vietnam’s Viettel are third on three points. Defending champions Ulsan Hyundai FC lead the standings on 12 points.

BG Pathum United were eager to repeat their 2-0 win from Matchday Three, with Diogo signalling their intent within the first 20 seconds but he couldn’t keep his header on target.

Viettel were almost undone by a defensive mistake in the 11th minute when Truong Van Thiet’s attempt to clear Sumanya Purisay’s cross deflected off the left post, before Diogo came close two minutes later, only for his header to miss by a hairline.

Viettel, also out to secure the three points with the hopes of reviving their debut campaign, placed their attacking trust in Caique and Pedro Paulo and the two Brazilians paired up in the 23rd minute with quick passes that caught BG Pathum United’s defence off guard, with Paulo finishing with a left footed strike to beat ‘keeper Chatcha Budprom.

At the other end, it was a story of missed opportunities for Diogo who should have scored in the 39th minute when a series of swift passes in the final third led to the former Olympiacos striker at the edge of the box but he shot wide, before failing to connect with Sarach Yooyen’s curling cross into the area two minutes later.

BG Pathum United kicked off the second half with fresh legs, with Teerasil Dangda, Kevin Ingreso and Surchat Sareepim coming off the bench to bolster the Thai side’s attacking options.

With the momentum in BG Pathum United’s favour, Chaowat Veerachat – who scored against Viettel three days ago – scored the equaliser when he dived in to head home Diogo’s cross in the 56th minute.

Diogo provided his second assist four minutes later, with Andres Tunez moving on his through pass before firing an unstoppable strike for BG Pathum United to take the lead.

The roles were reversed in the 64th minute with Veerachat nodding the ball down for Diogo, who stooped low to head in BG Pathum United’s third goal of the night.

Viettel tried to find their way back but it was to no avail as BG Pathum United will now look forward to playing Kaya FC-Iloilo of the Philippines on Thursday, while the Vietnamese side meet Ulsan Hyundai FC in the day’s earlier match.
