The Russians, who scored 17 goals for a perfect record of three wins in the group stage, continued to press the Vietnamese defence and finally found the breakthrough in the 11th minute with Andrei Afanasev setting up Robinho.

Vietnam, vying to reach the quarter-finals for the first time, came close to finding the net with efforts from Gia Hung Nhan and Dac Huy but instead, RFU extended their lead through Chishkala’s strike in the 18th minute.

Vietnam, however, immediately responded through Dac Huy’s effort to reduce the deficit with goalkeeper Ho Van Y playing his part in keeping the Southeast Asian side in the game for the remainder of the half.
