MANDIRI CUP™ 2025 – REPORT: VIETNAM 2-1 CAMBODIA
Jakarta: Nguyễn Đình Bắc’s 83rd minute header earned Vietnam a 2-1 win over Cambodia at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium on Tuesday to confirm the defending champions’ progress to the semi-finals of the ASEAN U-23 Mandiri Cup™ 2025 as Group B winners.
Đình Bắc nodded in the winner after Cambodia substitute Mon Rado had cancelled out Phạm Lý Đức’s 35th minute opener for Kim Sang-sik’s side and the win maintains Vietnam’s perfect start to the competition.
Victory means Vietnam will take on the Philippines in the semi-finals on Friday while Thailand, who won Group C, will meet tournament hosts Indonesia.
The Vietnamese dominated the opening 45 minutes in Jakarta, with Nguyễn Nhật Minh seeing his 20th minute header ruled out for offside before another headed effort by Nguyễn Quốc Việt 14 minutes later clipped the outside of goalkeeper Reth Ly Heng’s left post.
The opener came a minute later and again it was Vietnam’s superiority in the air that delivered. Khuất Văn Khang sent an inviting corner to the corner of the six yard box, from where Phạm Lý Đức powered in his effort.
Reth Ly Heng prevented Kim’s side from adding a second with less than a minute remaining in the half, beating away Nguyễn Văn Trường’s header from close range.
Having been second-best for much of the first half, the Cambodians almost levelled moments after the restart only for Võ Anh Quân to clear Vann Vit’s looping header off the goal line.
Reth Le Heng pulled off another fine save when he kept out a Nguyễn Xuân Bắc header from Quốc Việt’s corner and that was to prove pivotal when, in the 62nd minute, Cambodia pulled level.
Lucca Lim delivered a perfectly flighted corner from the Vietnamese left into the penalty area and substitute Mon Rado pounced to gleefully head beyond Trần Trung Kiên.
Reth Le Heng continued to keep Kim’s team at bay, parrying Anh Quân’s shot to safety as the full back bore down on goal moments after the equaliser and blocking a later attempt by Quốc Việt.
But, with time running out, Vietnam finally found a way through again as Đình Bắc rose to power his header home from Nguyễn Thành Đạt’s curling left-foot cross
