U19 Vietnam Women’s team won the runner-up at the 2023 AFF Women’s U19 Championship

Unable to came back from a goal down in the match with U19 Thailand in the final, U19 Vietnam women’s team finished as the runner-up, closing the journey at the 2023 AFF U19 Women’s Championship, taking place in Indonesia.

U19 Vietnam entered the final with a confident attitude. Coach Akira Ijiri’s team have maintained their unbeaten record since the beginning of the tournament. However, the U19 Thailand also showed their class with 3 convincing victories.

After the opening whistle, the Thailand team played impressively, controlling the game well on the field. However, the most dangerous opportunities of the half belonged to the Vietnam team. In the 16th minute, Bao Tram had the opportunity to cushion the ball close to the wall, but the captain of U19 Vietnam could not have a goal. At the end of the first half, the Vietnam team continuously had situations that caused turbulence towards the goal of the Thailand team. Minh Chuyen escaped down the right wing, but she did not finish correctly. In the 42nd minute, it was Hoang Van’s turn to face the Thailand’s goalkeeper but could not beat the opponent.

Entering the second half, after a good period of play, the U19 Vietnam suddenly lost 2 consecutive goals in 3 minutes. In the 69th minute, midfielder Suprapon launched a dangerous free kick to open the score for the Thailand team. In the 72nd minute, Jansri shot a beautiful long shot to double the difference. The Vietnam team understands that there is only way to raise the squad to attack.

In the 75th minute, Linh Trang hit a shot from close range to shorten the score to 1-2 for the Vietnam team. In the last 10 minutes of the game, Thanh Hieu had 2 more dangerous opportunities but could not take advantage to bring back the equalizer. The U19 Vietnam accepted an unfortunate defeat against the Thailand and won the runner-up position of the 2023 AFF U19 Championship.

In addition to the collective title, the U19 Vietnam women’s team has two players who have won individual titles. Striker Ngoc Minh Chuyen is the top scorer (5 goals) of the tournament and Danh Thi Kieu My is the best goalkeeper of the tournament.
