Vietnam Women’s National Team – Philippines Women’s National Team: Cruel injury-time moment
Conceding a goal right in injury time caused the Vietnam women’s national team to lose points, resulting in a disappointing draw against the Philippines women’s team. Nevertheless, Coach Mai Đức Chung and his players still have a chance to advance.
A defeat to Myanmar forced the Philippines to beat the Vietnam women’s team if they didn’t want to be eliminated early from the group stage of SEA Games 33. Because of this, immediately after the referee’s whistle, the Philippines surged forward with the hope of scoring early. However, against the level of eight-time SEA Games gold medalists, Coach Mai Đức Chung’s team quickly took control of the match. Moreover, Yến Hải and her teammates created many dangerous attacking opportunities in the first half.
In the 4th minute, Sự Vạn passed the ball to create an opportunity for Bích Thủy to challenge the Philippine defense. Six minutes later, the opposing goalkeeper Davies made a mistake in judgment. Her rush out of the penalty area, combined with a teammate clearing the ball straight into Bích Thủy’s path, almost resulted in a goal for Vietnam. Unfortunately, Bích Thủy’s curling shot to the far corner shortly after was too slow, allowing goalkeeper Davies to get back and block.
In the 17th minute, the Vietnam women’s team organized a set-piece corner kick. Thái Thị Thảo took a shot with her left foot from outside the penalty area. The ball was powerful, but it hit the target of the opposing goalkeeper. The subsequent period saw a tense battle between both sides. The score of 0-0 ended the exciting and dominant first half from the “Golden Star Women Warriors.”
In the second half, Vietnam’s women’s team continued to dominate. The substitution of Huỳnh Như before the break significantly boosted their attacking strength. In the 48th minute, Sự Vạn played a through pass for Bích Thủy inside the penalty area. The player decided to strike a chip shot toward the far corner, but the ball narrowly missed the post.
In the 56th minute, Huỳnh Như shot from outside the penalty area. The ball hit two Philippine defenders before reaching Bích Thủy in front of the goal. She dribbled past the goalkeeper but was stopped by Isabella just before the goal line. In the 80th minute, Sự Vạn received a through pass from Huỳnh Như, but the player shot over the crossbar.
In the 4th minute of added time, after a long pass over the top from goalkeeper Davies, Hali headed the ball to Carpio, and the player wearing number 19 continued heading straight toward the goal. Kim Thanh goalkeeper managed to save this shot but could not stop the rebound from Ramirez Louise.
Losing 0-1 to the Philippines, the Vietnam women’s team still has the chance to advance if they earn 3 points against Myanmar.
After the match, Coach Mai Đức Chung candidly took responsibility and affirmed that the entire team is determined to win the important match against Myanmar (12/11).
