Semifinal of the U21 National Football Championship: LPBank HAGL advances to the final after a penalty shootout
This afternoon (August 10), the two semifinal matches of the U21 National Football Championship took place at the PVF Youth Football Training Center. The first semifinal, featuring Quang Nam versus LPBank HAGL, ended with a victory for the mountain city team after a dramatic penalty shootout.
Both teams had previously defeated top championship contenders, Thể Công Viettel and Hà Nội, to reach the semifinals.
In this match, Quang Nam faced a slight disadvantage as their captain, Đình Bắc, was absent due to a suspension.
The game began cautiously. For the first 14 minutes, the ball mostly stayed in midfield with no real threats to either goal. It wasn’t until the 15th minute that a misplaced pass from a Quang Nam player landed at Minh Tâm’s feet, who scored a dangerous long-range shot to put LPBank HAGL ahead 1-0.
The unexpected goal left the Quang Nam players stunned, but they remained calm and didn’t push too aggressively for an equalizer. In the 21st minute, LPBank HAGL had a golden opportunity to extend their lead, but defender Văn Hoành managed to clear the ball off the line, saving Quang Nam from conceding another goal. In fact, after the opening goal, the mountain city team played with great enthusiasm and had the upper hand.
In the following period, several chances were created, especially in the second half when Quang Nam pushed forward in search of an opportunity to break into the mountain city team’s goal. Despite their efforts, they struggled to find a breakthrough. Just when it seemed the match would end with a victory for the mountain city team, a surprising turn of events occurred. In the 75th minute, an error by LPBank HAGL’s goalkeeper Trung Kiên allowed Huy Bảo to score, leveling the score at 1-1 for Quang Nam.
The goal was a cold shock to Coach Trịnh Duy Quang’s team, as the 1-1 draw meant the match went to a penalty shootout. However, the mountain city team came to the rescue of goalkeeper Trung Kiên, winning the shootout 5-3 to advance to the final.
