At the airport, President Tran Quoc Tuan, on behalf of the VFF Executive Committee Standing Board, presented flowers to welcome FIFA President Gianni Infantino to Vietnam. The FIFA President also extended his greetings to VFF President Tran Quoc Tuan and discussed several Vietnamese football activities with VFF Secretary General Nguyen Van Phu.

As part of the visit, FIFA President Gianni Infantino will engage in important activities in Hanoi on the afternoon of August 26, before heading to My Dinh National Stadium to attend the second leg of the ASEAN Championship 2026 final between the Vietnam national team and the Thailand national team.

This marks the second time FIFA President Gianni Infantino has visited Vietnam. His first visit took place in February 2018, during a working trip with official authorities that also included a tour of the Vietnam Youth Football Training Center.

Over the years, FIFA President Gianni Infantino has also personally attended several major football events in Southeast Asia on multiple occasions. In December 2021, he traveled to Singapore to attend the AFF Cup opening ceremony, demonstrating his interest in regional football and the ongoing efforts to develop its grassroots foundation.
In January 2023, FIFA President Gianni Infantino attended the second leg of the AFF Cup 2022 final between Thailand and Vietnam at Thammasat Stadium. He watched the match alongside VFF President Tran Quoc Tuan, the President of the Football Association of Thailand, and the AFF President, and subsequently participated in the post-match medal ceremony.
The presence of FIFA President Gianni Infantino and FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafström in Hanoi once again demonstrates FIFA’s ongoing attention to Southeast Asian football. It also offers Vietnamese football a valuable opportunity to highlight its progressive growth—backed by increasingly structured investments in national teams, youth development systems, infrastructure, and the hosting of international football events.
For the Vietnam national team, this occasion holds even greater significance as head coach Kim Sang Sik and his squad stand on the verge of successfully defending their ASEAN Championship title. In the first leg of the final at Rajamangala Stadium, Vietnam secured a 2-0 victory thanks to goals from Nguyen Hai Long and Nguyen Quang Hai, carving out a solid advantage ahead of the decisive home clash.
The second leg of the ASEAN Championship 2026 final between the Vietnam national team and the Thailand national team will take place at 20:00 on August 26 at My Dinh National Stadium.
