Doan Hung Son’s late goal saw Da Nang edge out Geylang United 3-2 at Chi Lang Stadium on Wednesday.

In a Group H encounter that swung back and forth, the visitors went ahead in the 18th minute when Walid Lounis found the back of the net.

Da Nang drew level five minutes before the break through Sebastian Gaston Merlo’s header before fellow striker Nicolas Hernandez netted his second AFC Cup goal in the 69th minute to put the hosts in front.

However, the Singaporeans would not lie down and equalised in the 74th minute when Siddiq Durimi struck but substitute Hung Son’s late intervention sealed Da Nang’s second consecutive 3-2 victory.

The Vietnamese side dominated the early exchanges but fell behind against the run of play when skipper Miroslav Latiak’s free-kick fell to Walid and the defender beat keeper Vo Van Hanh.

Nguyen Quang Cong and Hernandez were getting plenty of joy down the flanks while Phan Thanh Hung and Rogerinho (Rogerio Machado Pereira) were controlling the tempo of the game in the middle of the pitch but it took until the 40th minute for Da Nang to make their pressure tell.

Right-back Quang Cong delivered a cross into the box that and Merlo rose highest to head home the equaliser, his second goal in the competition.

Da Nang went in search of a second after the break and it duly arrived in the 69th minute. Quang Cong was again the provider but this time it was Hernandez whose free header beat keeper Yazid Yasin and ended up in the back of the net.

That seemed to set Da Nang comfortably on course for all three points only for Geylang to stun the home crowd 16 minutes from time when Siddiq nodded in an equaliser.

With time running out, a draw seemed the most likely outcome but with just one minute remaining, a mighty scramble in the Geylang box saw the ball fall to substitute Hung Son and he made no mistake in converting from close range to seal the points.

Following the 3-2 win in Bangkok over ThaiPort, the result means Da Nang now top Group H with a 100% record.
