Head coach Mai Duc Chung praises players as Vietnam close in on FIFA Women’s World Cup berth

Vietnam head coach Mai Duc Chung praised his charges following their 2-0 victory against Thailand in the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia/New Zealand playoff tie on Wednesday.

First half goals from Huynh Nhu and Thai Thi Thao sealed victory for head coach Mai Duc Chung’s charges at D.Y. Patil Stadium and a win against Chinese Taipei on Sunday will confirm Vietnam’s maiden FIFA Women’s World Cup appearance.
Head coach Mai Duc Chung was pleased with his players’ performance, adding that they had shown maturity to earn the well deserved victory.
“I want to congratulate the players for the victory,” said head coach Mai Duc Chung. “They have proven themselves and their performance has been improving. I’m proud of them.”
Vietnam took the game to a Thailand team still affected by a COVID-19 outbreak in their squad, taking the lead through captain Huynh Nhu in the 19th minute before Thai doubled the advantage five minutes later.
“Against Thailand, the players followed everything I told them to do and they executed the plan well. It’s a good feeling to finally get that victory. Our performance took a slight dip in the second half due to the humidity but we managed to contain our opponents.”
Victory over Thailand has put Vietnam closer to realising their FIFA Women’s World Cup dream and head coach Mai Duc Chung said his players will go all out to claim victory against Chinese Taipei.
“Next up for us is Chinese Taipei and we have three days of preparation and recovery. I hope the players will be ready as we need to win the next game to qualify for the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
“We will work hard and give it our all against Chinese Taipei.”
