The Vietnam men’s national football team leapt up three places to claim the 153rd position in the latest FIFA rankings for September.

With 144 points, Vietnam has overtaken Singapore and stands in third place in the Southeast Asia region. Thailand maintained its domination in the region with 206 points despite its two-place slide in the world and the Philippines is in second place with 200 points.

Japan remains atop the Asian standings with 671 points despite slipping down five places to 42nd in the world this month, while Iran (48th in the world) and Australia (53rd) followed in second and third positions with 633 and 603 points, respectively.

Spain continues to reign on top of the world this month with 1,514 points, followed by Argentina with 1,263 points thanks to its good result in the recent World Cup qualifying round. Germany dropped one notch to number three with 1,261 points

There were large changes in the world top five with Italy jumping up two notches to fourth with 1,199 points while Colombia dropped two places to fifth.

The next FIFA rankings are expected to be announced on October 17.
