The hosts fielded a strong side and dominated proceeding from the start as they sent out a warning of their intent when Alves smashed a free-kick against the bar in the 10th minute.

However, a lack of concentration almost cost the 2009 V-League runners-up five minutes later when Hussain Simaz was left unmarked but the forward fired wide off the post.

Binh Duong sprung to life following that let off and opened the scoring a minute later when Simaz fouled Alves in the area and the Brazil-born Vietnam international striker stepped up to convert the penalty.

The Vietnamese side dominated from then on and created numerous chances to extend their lead with Nguyen Vu Phong and Nguyen Huu Thang proving particularly wasteful when in good positions to score.

But they grabbed the goal their domination deserved 10 minutes before the break when South African Philani volleyed home.

Elenildo de Jesus failed to convert two one-on-one chances with the Victory goalkeeper soon after as Binh Duong kept up the pressure to the half-time whistle.

The hosts took their foot off the pedal after the restart which allowed the visitors to press more and they created only their second chance of the game when Simaz just failed to get on the end of Naseer Mukhtar’s cross.

But for all their endeavour, Victory’s chances of getting back into the game were ended in the 65th minute when Minh Chuyen diverted a header into the back of the net.

Victory should have scored their first goal at this year’s AFC Cup with five minutes remaining when the Maldives side were awarded a penalty but Ibrahim Fazeel hit the bar with his spot kick.
