Qualifiers Final Round – Group A MD2: Vietnam 1-0 Myanmar

Jeju: Vietnam sealed their place in the AFC Women’s Olympic Qualifiers Play-offs after defeating Myanmar 1-0 in their final round Group A tie at the Jeju World Cup Stadium on Thursday.

Myanmar were forced to defend from the first blow of the whistle as Mai Duc Chung’s Vietnam came charging at them with Pham Thi Tuoi, Huynh Nhu and Nguyen Thi Bich Thuy causing numerous problems.

Vietnam had their first chance in the ninth minute when Nguyen Thi Tuyet Dung gained possession on the right flank before sending a cross to Pham Hai Yen, who couldn’t get her shot on target.

The 2019 SEA Games champions had another look at goal in the 16th minute through Nguyen Dung’s free-kick and four minutes later, the midfielder forced a save from Myanmar goalkeeper Mya Phu Ngon off a corner.

Myanmar came alive just before the half-hour mark when midfielder Nu Nu broke free from the centre before sending a deep cross into the box but Thin Thin Yu was unable to capitalise.

Vietnam almost found the net in the 35th minute but Ngan Thi Van Su’s finishing failed to do justice to the excellent buildup leading to the opportunity.

Vietnam began the second half with renewed purpose but saw their best chance of the game foiled by Mya when she scrambled the ball to safety following Huynh Nhu header from close range.

Vietnam’s persistence finally paid off in the 62nd minute when Ngan Van Su was quick to nod home Nguyen Bich Thuy’s cross from the left.

Myanmar had a chance to equalise five minutes later but midfielder Oo Yee Yee fired wide despite a gaping goalmouth as Vietnam held firm to seal their place in the Play-offs.
