Viet Nam received a bye for the 2011 Asian Cup Preliminary as the only team in the Southeast Asian region who qualified for the quarter-finals in the previous cup, which was co-hosted by Viet Nam , Thailand , Indonesia and Malaysia , according to an Asian Football Confederation announcement. 

The Asian premier football tournament, organized every four years, also saw Saudi Arabia , the Republic of Korea and Iraq getting byes through the final round of the 2011 Asian Cup, to be held in Qatar . 

As scheduled, 24 teams will compete in two qualifying stages with the 10 best moving on to participate in the finals.
