With the guidance and active support from FIFA, the final steps for VAR to be officially operated at the National Professional Football League system are being implemented by VPF. In order for the referee to gradually catch up with VAR technology, based on recommendations from FIFA, in the early stages, VPF will choose about 3 to 5 matches at Night Wolf V.League 1-2023 to operate the match with VAR.
Matches that are not competitive for championship rankings or promotion or relegation will be selected for deployment. Based on the scores of the teams on the current rankings, the VPF and the VFF’s Arbitration Committee will coordinate to select matches that meet the criteria as recommended by FIFA to apply the VAR from round 3, phase 2, Night Wolf V.League 1-2023.
For the field of matches with VAR, FIFA also requires all fields to be geodeticized with specialized machines, providing accurate size data to integrate the virtual offside line for the system. The steps to apply VAR technology in Vietnam are closely followed by FIFA and will monitor the entire operation process continuously within the next 3 years. Any errors, if any, during this 3-year monitoring, could cause the implementation of VAR into matches to be halted.
In order to implement the VAR implementation plan, the VPF together with the VFF Arbitration Committee have planned to work with the national league clubs to disseminate content related to the application of VAR technology at the match. On July 14 and 15, the VPF Company and the VFF Arbitration Committee had the first meeting with Viettel Club and Hong Linh Ha Tinh Club, in order to disseminate information to players and members of V.League clubs. The content of the exchange revolves around information on operating principles and activities of VAR at matches; What players and coaching staff can and cannot do in VAR matches. In the coming time, the VPF and the VFF Arbitration Committee will continue to work with the national league clubs playing in the 2023 season.
VAR (short for Video Assistant Referee) is a form of application of advanced technology in assisting referees through video. VAR technology is used in football to help referees make the most accurate decisions through recorded videos. VAR is only used in the event of an “obvious error” or “major missed situation” involving:
- Goal/no goal
- Penalty/no penalty
- Direct red card (not 2nd yellow/second warning)
- Misidentification of the offending player (in the event of a warning/yellow card or disqualification)
The introduction of VAR technology into matches right from the 2023 season is being supported and expected by the clubs. After the match at Hang Day Stadium on the evening of July 16, coach Nguyen Thanh Cong of Hong Linh Ha Tinh Club shared: “The application of VAR technology will definitely assist the referee to make a more accurate decision and a fairer match. In the first time when applying VAR, everything may be a bit confusing, but I personally support VAR with Hong Linh Ha Tinh players”.
