Under-21 Hoang Anh Gia Lai exited the Southeast Asian contest after losing 5-0 to defending champions Thailand in their final group stage on March 8.

Hoang Anh Gia Lai needed a victory over Thailand, who had occupied the top spot, to finish runners-up in the group. However, the Vietnamese team failed to upset Thailand, while Malaysia beat Singapore 2-0 to win second place to qualify for the semi-finals.

The Vietnamese team went 3-0 down after 12 minutes as the Thais completely dominated the game.

On 71 minutes, Hoang Anh Gia Lai went down to ten men as Phan Duc Thinh was sent off. The Thais scored two more goals to seal a crushing 5-0 victory.

Hoang Anh Gia Lai finished third in the group, behind Thailand and Malaysia, after two draws and one defeat.
