President Nguyen Minh Triet Monday met with Vietnam’s new national football coach, Portuguese Henrique Calisto, and offered him words of encouragement.

The meeting took place in the southern province of Long An just before Calisto’s arrival in Hanoi to take charge of the team.

The coach told reporters the meeting “impressed” him and he felt “proud” and “encouraged”.

Calisto plans, right after flying to Hanoi today, to go to the northern province of Phu Tho to burn incense in commemoration of the Hung Kings on the anniversary of their death.

The provincial government, together with the Long An Football Federation, held a sendoff party to Calisto.

Calisto signed a contract with the Vietnam Football Federation last month to replace Austrian Alfred Riedl who stepped down last December.
