The 90 minutes of official time during the first semifinal, though goalless, was by no means boring.

It was, in fact, exciting, with both sides constantly attacking. It was the excellence of the two goalkeepers Minh Chien of Tien Giang and Thanh Trung Nam Dinh which kept the scoresheet clean despite several dangerous shots.

Tien Giang captain Long Giang was named the best player of the match.

The other semifinal kicks off Friday between defending champion Binh Dinh and Hoang Anh Gia Lai.

Before the kickoff on Thursday, Vietnamese President Nguyen Minh Triet met the players and officials.

He praised them for continuing to play though the city was badly hit by Typhoon Xangsane last Sunday. He also hailed the fair play evident from all teams.

The final is scheduled for October 8.
