Vietnam name preliminary squad for Thailand 2020
Hanoi: Vietnam head coach Park Hang-seo has called up 28 players for a training camp in Korea Republic ahead of the AFC U23 Championship Thailand 2020.
The Golden Dragons, who returned home after clinching a historic gold medal in the recent 2019 SEA Games, will depart for Korea Republic on Friday.
Midfielder Nguyen Quang Hai and goalkeeper Bui Tien Dung are just some of the familiar players named for the training camp, but Doan Van Hau – who plays for Netherlands’ SC Heerenveen – will not be joining his compatriots due to club commitments.
The 60-year-old Park has managed Vietnam since 2017, and one of his first outings as head coach was the AFC U23 Championship China 2018, where the Southeast Asians surged to the final, before losing 2-1 to Uzbekistan.
Having qualified for Thailand 2020 with a perfect record, Vietnam will be aiming for another successful run with the top three teams sealing tickets to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Vietnam, drawn in Group D, have DPR Korea, Jordan and the United Arab Emirates for company.
The AFC U23 Championship Thailand 2020 will kick off on January 8, with the final scheduled for January 26.
