The national women’s football team failed to gain three points in their first game against the Thai rivals in Group B on February 19 within the qualifying round for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

This is a surprise for the fans as the team had kept a record of defeating the Thais since 2001.

Before the match, leaders of the Vietnam team believed that their players would attain an easy win regardless of playing on the hosts’ ground. Coach Tran Ngoc Thai Tuan said that the Vietnamese had several goal opportunities but failed to find the net.

Then ill fortune came to the Vietnam team in the 85th minute when goalkeeper Kieu Trinh made a mistake, providing an opportunity for their rivals to score the only goal of the match.

Vietnam team will meet Singapore and Maldives in the hope of gaining two wins to qualify for the next round.
