AFC applies VAR technology to all matches at the U23 Asian Cup 2024
On the morning of April 14 local time, AFC representatives had a meeting with the U23 Vietnam to disseminate general regulations for teams participating in the U23 Asian Cup 2024. Important contents in Competition rules are also mentioned, including the application of VAR technology in all matches of the tournament.
This is a regular activity organized by the AFC before each tournament to help participating teams understand their rights and responsibilities during participation in the tournament. The important contents emphasized by AFC at the meeting are the prevention of negativity in football, the spirit of compliance with the Laws of the Competition, fair play, and respect for referee decisions.
AFC representative said that, like the 2022 season, video assistant referee (VAR) will continue to be deployed in all 32 matches of the U23 Asian Cup 2024. This technology helps support the referee review the video from many different angles to make the most accurate decision. However, according to the regulations of FIFA and the International Football Rules Board (IFAB), VAR is only used in the case of a “clear error” or “seriously missed situation” related to: Goals /no goal, penalty/no penalty, direct red card (not a second yellow card/second warning), misidentification of the violating player (in case the referee gives a warning/yellow card or disqualification).
In addition, the AFC also provides a tablet in the technical area of the teams participating in the U23 Asian Cup 2024 to support the professional work of the coaching staff of the teams. This tablet will be provided with access to many different camera angles, allowing teams to watch live or review situations on the field. However, AFC emphasizes the use of tablets for tactical and medical analysis purposes only (reviewing collision situations leading to injuries). Teams are not allowed to use tablet footage to review or challenge the referee’s decision.
In addition, AFC also provides participating teams with an account with access to the PressBox Live platform to exploit resources for continuously updated statistical data at matches. This greatly helps the coaching staff of the teams in analyzing tactics before, after, and even during the match.
Also at the meeting, the department in charge of commercial rights for AFC tournaments inspected the training and competition equipment of the U23 Vietnam. Due to having experience participating in major tournaments of FIFA and AFC as well as understanding the regulations of the Charter, all of the team’s equipment fully and accurately meets AFC’s requirements, from font use to logo size as well as other strict regulations related to the tournament’s image copyright.
Tonight at 8:00 pm local time, coach Hoang Anh Tuan and the team will continue to practice at Al Erssal field.
