AFC U23 Asian Cup 2024: Vietnam says good bye after the quarter-final
Despite playing hard, U23 Vietnam had to stop in the quarterfinals of the AFC U23 Asian Cup 2024 when losing 0-1 to U23 Iraq.
Compared to the match against U23 Malaysia in the group stage, the starting lineup of U23 Vietnam in the quarter-final match with U23 Iraq had only one change when Vi Hao entered the field from the beginning of the match, the remaining 10 positions were all unchanged. Meanwhile, U23 Iraq started with the strongest squad. Star Ali Jassim appears as an attacking midfielder.
Controlling more than 60% of the match, U23 Iraq organized many ball attacks towards Vietnam’s goal. In particular, the right wing where Ho Van Cuong was stationed became the main attack direction with the mobility of Ali Jasim and Ali Al Mosawe. However, U23 Vietnam’s defense had a pretty impressive half.
In the first half, U23 Vietnam received 3 corner kicks, but all of them failed to create a chance.
In the second half, Van Chuan continued to play excellently when he resolved Ali Al Mosawe’s shot at a tight angle after a pass in front of Van Khang. In the 57th minute, Van Khang was the author of the cross that hit the crossbar. Just three minutes later, the referee checked VAR after Van Chuan fouled Nihad Mohammed in the penalty area. A penalty was awarded to U23 Iraq and Ali Jasim did not miss the opportunity to open the score.
In the second half of the second half, coach Hoang Anh Tuan brought Duc Phu and Hong Phuc to replace Thai Son and Van Cuong (73rd minute). About 10 minutes later, Minh Quang and Nguyen Hoang were brought onto the field to replace Van Tung and Vi Hao to strengthen the attack. Minute 90+2, Manh Hung received a red card after a foul foul on Ali Jasim. The match went into extra time for 13 minutes. U23 Vietnam played hard but could not score an equalizer. Losing 0-1, U23 Vietnam bid farewell to the 2024 U23 Asian Finals, and U23 Iraq will enter the semi-finals. The opponent of the West Asian tournament will be Japan U23.
