AFF Women’s Championships 2022: Vietnam Women team competes for bronze medal with Myanmar

Played against host Philippines, which has played very well recently and is also the representative of Southeast Asia to qualifier to the 2023 Women’s World Cup, head coach Mai Duc Chung is cautious and used the strongest formation for the Vietnamese women’s team.

The first half was a difficult time while Vietnamese women’s team under pressure of the host Philippines. The advantage of physicality from naturalized Filipino players helps the Philippines team continuously win in duels against the Vietnamese women’s team. In the 23rd minute, Chuong Thi Kieu broke the ball unequivocally, unintentionally creating conditions for the Philippine women’s team to threaten the Vietnamese goal. Fortunately, goalkeeper Kim Thanh has mastered the situation.

7 minutes later, the Philippines launched a pass in front of the Vietnamese women’s goal. Thuy Trang headed off to save the danger before the opponent had a chance to create a goal. However, by the 32nd minute, the Vietnamese women’s team also had to recieved a goal down. From the corner kick on the left wing, Hari Long of the Philippines women’s team had a header in a tight corner, put the ball into the net of the Vietnamese women’s team.

Huynh Nhu and her teammates almost suffered the second goal only 2 minutes later. Sawicki escaped to catch a long pass from her Filipino teammate. She lifted the ball technically to put the ball out of reach of Kim Thanh but fortunately for Vietnamese women’s team when the ball went wide of the goal.

In the 36th minute, another situation attacked the goal of the Vietnamese women’s team. In a quick counterattack, Bolden penetrated the penalty area of the Vietnamese women’s team, but Chuong Thi Kieu promptly cut the ball to save the team. In the last minutes of the first half, Vietnam team continuously attacked in order to find out the goals, clear the gap, but failed.

In the second half, the Vietnamese women’s team tried to raise up to equalize. But the nightmare, especially the high ball phase continues to haunt the team of coach Mai Duc Chung. In the 51st minute, Hoang Thi Loan carelessly let the ball touch her hand in the penalty area. Then on the 11-meter mark, Annis successfully made it to increase the score to 2-0.

In the 63rd minute, the Vietnamese women’s team faced the third goal. Still the scenario of the corner kick and the header, captain Annis passed Bolden to score. Not stopping there, in the 75th minute, Bolden finished with the header to the empty goal of the Vietnamese women’s team. In the 85th minute, another situation where the Philippines threatened the goal of the Vietnamese women’s team with a high ball. Kim Thanh missed and could not break the ball. However, the opposing player also shot incorrectly.

The final score 0-4 ended a series of 10 consecutive victories of the Vietnamese women’s team against the Philippines women’s team. This is the first time that the Vietnamese women’s team has lost against this opponent. With this loss, Vietnamese women’s team becomes the former queen of Southeast Asia and missed an appointment with Thailand in the final of the tournament.

The Vietnamese women’s team will compete for bronze with Myanmar (the team lost 0-2 to Thailand in the first semi-final), while the Philippines and Thailand will meet in the final.
