A hat-trick by striker Tuyet Mai helped the Vietnamese women”s football team to a place in the second qualifying round of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games after a 3-0 victory over Singapore in their final group match in Bangkok, Thailand, on February 23.

Hosts Thailand went top of the group after trouncing the Maldives 9-0 in an earlier match.

The Vietnamese side went through as runners-up of the table and they will replay Thailand and compete with Japan and runners-up of Group A in the second qualifying round.

Playing against Singapore, the Vietnamese made three changes with Khanh Ly coming for goalkeeper Kieu Trinh and Huyen Linh and Le Thi Hien replacing Minh Nguyen and Hai Anh. 

The Vietnamese team had their best game so far in the qualifying round, according to the coaching board, completely dominating the game.

Tuyet Mai scored three goals in the 18th, 22nd and 72nd minutes to earn Vietnam the second victory.

They finished runners-up to Thailand, who won three games.

After returning home, the team will be re-called on March 18 to prepare for the second qualifying round.
