AFC U23 Asian Cup 2024: U23 Vietnam meets U23 Iraq in the quarterfinals
U23 Vietnam ranked second in Group D and met U23 Iraq in the quarter-finals of the AFC U23 Asian Cup 2024.
In the match taking place on the evening of April 24, coach Hoang Anh Tuan made 8 changes compared to the squad that defeated U23 Malaysia in the second round. This shows that U23 Vietnam is determined but also needs to protect the best forces for the quarterfinals.
Right in the 4th minute, Ibragimov passed the ball to Alisher Odilov to easily open the score for U23 Uzbekistan. Accounting for nearly 70% of the ball control time, the Central Asian team had no difficulty pushing U23 Vietnam into a defensive position. A rare situation was when he won the ball near the touchline, but Minh Quang’s final kick was inaccurate.
In the 36th minute, Ruslanbek Jiyanov escaped the offside trap and scored the second goal for U23 Uzbekistan. And then, in the 40th minute, it was Alisher Odilov’s turn to score a header.
Three goals conceded in the first half forced coach Hoang Anh Tuan to change by bringing in Van Khang, Vi Hao, Van Truong, and Minh Khoa to replace Duc Viet, Nguyen Hoang, Duc Viet, and Minh Quang in the second half. This adjustment creates a better position for U23 Vietnam. In the 68th minute, Hong Phuc ran up and crossed for Vi Hao. Unfortunately, this player’s kick went to the exact position chosen by goalkeeper Nematov.
Despite great efforts, coach Hoang Anh Tuan’s players could not get an honorable goal. Losing 0-3 to U23 Uzbekistan, U23 Vietnam stood in second place in Group D and met U23 Iraq, in the quarterfinals taking place at 0:30 on April 27.
