Training to learn from VAR referee experience: Continuously improve to master VAR technology
On the morning of March 29, VPF and the VFF’s Arbitration Committee coordinated to organize training to learn from experience related to the operation of VAR technology at the 2023/24 Night Wolf V.League 1 in the past phase 1.
Attending the program were Mr. Tran Quoc Tuan – VFF’s President, Mr. Nguyen Minh Ngoc – General Director of VPF Company, Head of the Organizing Committee of the 2023/24 National Football League; Mr. Dang Thanh Ha – Chairman of the VFF’s Arbitration Committee, and members of the Arbitration Committee, VAR Referees and technicians (RO) are on duty at the tournament.
At the experience-drawing session, issues related to coordination between the VAR referee team, the referee team on duty, and technicians; Coordination with the television team was discussed, and lessons learned from existing problems, with the aim of better coordinating work between departments in the next phase of the season, promoting the effectiveness of VAR in tournament organization.
Speaking at the training session, President of Vietnam Football Federation Tran Quoc Tuan said: “We always have challenges ahead. In the past 13 rounds, VAR technology has played an important role in making the tournament fairer, providing great support for the referee to run the match, thereby contributing to improving the quality of the tournament. Subjectively, I appreciate the focus and efforts of the referee and technician team in operating VAR.
However, for VAR to maximize its role, I suggest that the Arbitration Committee, VAR referees, and technicians actively discuss and agree more on the process and come up with optimal solutions to achieve maximum efficiency. Processing situations must be faster, while still ensuring absolute accuracy. Your task in the coming time must be to try your best to ensure the quality of human operations. The mission of the Arbitration Committee is to ensure sufficient quantity and quality of personnel so that as soon as we have sufficient facilities, we can proceed to apply VAR in all matches of the national championship.”
The President of the Vietnam Football Federation also shared more practical experiences in the process of running international tournaments in operating VAR, so that the referee team has more experience in handling some specific situations.
At the training session to learn from experience, the Chairman of VFF’s Arbitration Committee Dang Thanh Ha emphasized that the mentality of relying on VAR during the match management process is not allowed. “That is a very dangerous thing, it absolutely cannot be allowed to happen. VAR is only a support tool and does not play a decisive role. The referee on the field is the one who makes the decision and must do it.”
In addition to professional situations and issues, coordination in operations is also an important content of the training session to learn from experience. During the operation process, good coordination between VAR technicians and referees will help VAR operate more smoothly and accurately, avoiding the situation where the match is interrupted for too long.
Training and gaining experience in VAR operations are regular activities of the Arbitration Committee and VPF Company to help the operations team (referees, assistant referees, technicians) constantly train, and improve your own experience, thereby completing assigned tasks well, and contributing to the overall success of the tournament.
