Shanghai Shenhua of China gained a vital lead with a 3-1 thrashing of struggling V-League champions Dong Tam Long An in the first leg of the AFC Champions League Group G doubleheader.

The group has been whittled down to two teams after the disqualification of Indonesian outfit Persipura Jayapura and Thai club Provincial Electricity Authority due to late registration of players.

Wang Ke put the 2005 China Super League runners-up ahead after just eight minutes and Xie Hui doubled the advantage three minutes later. Xie netted his brace six minutes into the second period. Antonio reduced the arrears for Dong Tam Long An, who slipped to the basement of the V-League last week, five minutes past the hour mark.

The return leg will be held on May 3 and the winners will qualify directly for the quarter-finals.
