Can Tho shock Hoang Anh Gia Lai in preliminary round of national cup

Can Tho shocked twice V-League champions Hoang Anh Gia Lai with 2-1 victory in the preliminary round of the national cup, which kicked off on February 9.

Kokhreidze Irakli opened the scoring for host Can Tho in the eighth minute. On-loan centreback Vu Duy Hoang levelled the score after 16 minutes.

Irakli helped Can Tho advance to the next round, sealing a 2-1 victory with a winner in the 59th minute.

Rampant Southern Steel Saigon Port trounced Pomina Steel Tien Giang 4-1 in Ho Chi Minh City. Pomina Steel Tien Giang, featured with young players, were outplayed by their hosts. After 15 minutes, Da Silva set up Ngoc Quang, who volleyed the ball into the net after goalkeeper Duc Nam failed to reach the ball in the air.

Five minutes before half-time, Da Silva extended the lead for the home side, heading in Minh Trung”s corner kick. Hoang Tu”s freekick deflected the defending wall and found the net, helping the visitors narrow the game just before the break.

Eight minutes into the second half, Da Silva produced an unstoppable volley to restore a two goal lead for Southern Steel Saigon Port. Quoc Thinh found his own net in the 70th minute after goalkeeper Duc Nam blocked Elenildo”s powerful strike.

In Nam Dinh, host Phu My Nam Dinh faced no troubles from Military Region Five, winning 4-0 with a hat-trick by new contract Eric Harrison and a goal by Odibe Chukwunwize.
